LAST NEANDERTHALS

OSCURUSCIUTO

research

The 2025 excavation at the Oscurusciuto site, held by the Research Unit of Prehistory and Anthropology of the University of Siena in collaboration with the Last Neanderthals Project, has successfully concluded. We’ve continued our excavations revealing crucial data to our understanding of Neanderthal life in this region.

As part of the Last Neanderthal project, this season we conducted a raw material survey in the area and focused on collecting samples that will undergo a range of analyses. From pollen analysis to micromorphology, cryptotephra and sedimentological studies, the samples collected promise to significantly advance our understanding of the paleoenvironmental and geoarchaeological aspects of the site. We are eager to share more as our analyses progress and yield results.
