LAST NEANDERTHALS
Liščí díra cave
research
As part of the Last Neanderthals project, visiting Liščí díra cave in April 2025 in order to reassess the site and reexamine the profiles opened by Klíma, with the goal of clarifying the age of the archaeological deposits and the cultural attribution of the lithic assemblage.
Liščí díra (Fox Hole Cave) is located in the Moravian Karst, approximately 6 km from the Brno basin. The site was previously intensively excavated between 1959 and 1961 by B. Klíma, who uncovered non-diagnostic stone tools that were broadly attributed to the Early Upper Paleolithic, but which may even date back to the transitional period.
During the recent excavation, we succeeded in exposing Klíma’s Layer 6, which will now undergo comprehensive environmental, cultural, and biological analyses at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Brno, and at the Universities of Siena, Haifa, and Bologna.
The excavation was directed by Petr Škrdla, with contributions from:
– Martin Novák – 3D documentation
– Jaroslav Bartík and Ondřej Herčík – Area supervision and documentation
– Katarína Adameková and Ivan Martini – Sedimentology
– Soňa Boriová and Silvia Monterrosa – Faunal and osteological analysis
– Dalma Kerekes – Field documentation and lithic analysis
